Region Värmland works to create the conditions for growth. But what does this actually mean?
Growth is necessary to finance our welfare. Without growth, i. e. an increase in GNP, we receive lower tax revenues and thereby less money to use for schools, health and welfare, as well as for other services that are needed in a modern society.
Värmland is not a selfsufficient region. We are dependent on the world around us and on a global market with open borders that connects our economy with the rest of the world. To achieve growth in Värmland we also need to attract money from outside. We therefore need companies in Värmland that can compete on the international market with their products and services.
There are many factors that contribute to a region being successful in achieving sustained growth over time. Perhaps the most important factors are:
• A development-orientated, skilled and specialised workforce
The level of education in a region is its most important asset; the factor that best explains the driving force behind growth. The degree of technical development is often crucial. It is also important to have research and development activities that match the companies’ requirements – now and in the future. Furthermore it is important that there is a specialised workforce with skills that match the needs of the companies in the regional labour market.

• Enthusiasts and entrepreneurs: people who make a difference
A positive climate for entrepreneurs fuels growth. It is the people with the ability to create, test and realize new ideas who make a difference.
• Cultural values and the ability to cooperate
People usually talk about the importance of being able to set common goals and then realize them – together. This capacity is largely governed by the values we have, how we relate to each other and how trust in society and its institutions functions. At Region Värmland we work with these issues, and many more. All with the aim of generating the conditions necessary for growth in Värmland.
