Conscious photography
A picture conveys a message to the receiver, who quickly reacts without any reflection at first. Our own conceptions and experiences contribute to our interpretation of the picture. What we feel and perceive depend on the picture’s composition, subject, the interplay between the people depicted, cutting, size, and if it cooperates with a headline or a text.
Think about what or who is in the picture and why as well as what or who the picture may exclude and why.
Do the following
Ask everyone to bring their smartphone to the exercise. Work in pairs or in larger groups. Arrange and take pictures that you think apply to these themes:
- Gender equality
- Equity
- Power
- Cooperation
- A theme of your own?
Discuss
Go through the pictures and explain your choice of subject and composition.
Discuss what you see, feel, and perceive.
- Which pictures were difficult to take? Why?
