Practise for the job interview

To hire a new co-worker is an important task, because every person contributes to the corporate culture in their unique way. This exercise helps you spot norms and unconscious structures that can be of relevance during a job interview.

Do the following

For this exercise, you need to be four participants: two women and two men.

  • Person A (man)
  • Person B (man)
  • Person C (woman)
  • Person D (woman)

Person A (man) and person C (woman) interview person B (man) and after that, person D (woman). Both of them have applied for the job as a carpenter.

The next step is that person B (man) and person D (woman) interview person A (man) and after that, person C (woman). Both of them have applied for the job as a seamstress.

Use the interview template.

When all interviews are done, you reflect on and talk about what you thought about the conversations.

  • Can you see any difference in how women and men react?
  • Was the interview perceived differently if the interviewee was a woman or a man?
  • Were there any questions that you reacted more or less to, depending if the interviewee was a woman or a man?
  • Were the questions asked differently if the interviewee was a woman or a man?
  • Is it okay to ask all questions to both women and men?
  • If not, which questions differ? Which are not okay to ask both women and men?
