Addressing everyone

Think about how you express yourself to make sure that everyone feels addressed and included.

People standing by a coffee machine gossiping.

By beginning a meeting on Monday morning with “What have you and the family been doing this weekend?” may be excluding for those who do not have a family. It is more inclusive to say “How was your weekend? Did anyone do something special?”

Other examples of unequal communication:

  • The lecturer that is talking about insurances and only bring out men in their examples, when half of the audience are women.
  • Businesses that address everyone in a municipality and use the word “citizens” instead of “inhabitants”. Inhabitants also include people who are not Swedish citizens.
  • When recruiting health-care professionals, a picture of female nurses is shown, which may lead to men not wanting to apply for the position.

Do the following

Make a list of words, expressions, and other content that can result in parts of your target group feeling left out.

Discuss

  • Which words and expressions can you use instead?
  • What do you do to make sure that your target group feels addressed and included?
