An additional check

Become aware of how your communication affect others. The exercise below is an example of how you can evaluate your communication efforts from a gender equality perspective. Make a practise of performing an additional check of a finished text, presentation, picture, web page or printed matter.

Do the following

Arrange a workshop where you go through the communication you have produced lately, for example during the last six or twelve months. Ask everyone to bring good and not-so-good examples that can be used in the discussion.

Discuss

Focus on the texts:

  • Are we using words and expressions in an equal way?
  • Are men and women given the same space?
  • Are men and women answering the same kinds of questions in interviews?
  • How do we express ourselves in questions concerning the family situation of a person? Do they have a family? What does it look like?

Focus on the pictures:

  • How are men and women portrayed in our pictures?
  • How is the interplay between men and women when they are in the same picture? Who is active, who is passive? Is their relationship equal?
  • Do our pictures depict gender equality? Diversity? Equity?

What we are good at

Collect good examples. Discuss why you think they are good and how you can use them in your daily operation.

What we want to do better

Bring out the not-so-good examples that were brought to the workshop. Discuss what you do not like. What could you have done instead? Do you see any pattern in the not-so-good examples?

Finish the workshop by compiling a common list of things you want to improve. This will be your own checklist for more equal communication.
