Emotionally charged expressions
Words signal values and give people different qualities. That is why it is important to be aware of the effect that emotionally charged words get in different situations.
Examples of emotionally charged words are: beautiful, strong, soft, efficient, dominant, result-orientated, caring, and driven.
Do the following
Look at the four different images of the exercise.
Imagine that you are going to describe a person to others.
- Choose one of the four persons.
- Describe the person with as stereotypical expressions as possible.
- Then describe the same person with as equal and inclusive words as possible.
Discuss
- What words and expressions give the person their special qualities in your text?
- What values and perceptions do these words and expressions signal?
- Which text was most difficult to write? Why?

Example of a stereotypical description
A mannish female chef with a will of her own.

Example of an inclusive description
A goal-oriented chef aiming for the top.

The bad boy of the office with a rock ’n’ roll attitude.

A talented project manager.
